Wide Open Spaces

c. 2004–2025

After the houses, I turned my attention to the sea and the sky, especially clouds, which are so much fun to paint. But the work is still about light and shadow, and how I can make them speak. Murmuration tells of a land that existed before time and before sound. One day a flurry of noise rose, louder and louder, until a cloud of birds burst over the horizon. The clattering grew unbearably cacophonous, until the birds passed overhead and were gone, and the land fell silent once more. And in Voyage, my most recent work, I’ve begun to return to walls and windows looking out to the freedom of space, with heaving water and a fluttering pink skirt to carry the movement.
