Interiors
1995–2005
My fascination with interior spaces began in grade school, when I saw Rear Window for the first time. Hitchcock’s treatment of space resonated with me profoundly, even at that young age, and I carried it into my work.
Edward Hopper once said that all he wanted was to paint sunlight on the side of a house. I feel the same about light hitting a wall. Those shapes of light take on personalities, like characters in a play, and the shadow shapes vie with them to create positive and negative space. I keep my interiors to the minimum: light and shadow, walls, doors, and curtains, and sometimes an empty chair or table.
Through light and color, I try to create an atmosphere of silence, stillness, and mystery. That quiet holds a kind of tension, a pull to enter the space and stay a while to think.
